Why am I Yarn KRAZY?
Well, I guess you could say it’s all my grandmother’s fault.
When I was 7, my mother, younger sister J and I all lived with my maternal grandmother and her commonlaw husband in Huntington, West Virginia. It was the first time I remember having any kind of regular contact with her.
In the evenings, when the house was clean and everyone was fed, Grandma would sit on the couch and crochet. I would sit and watch her, in total awe of what she could do with a ball of yarn and a hook. After enough of me sitting, staring, and asking incessant questions, she finally gave me a ball of my own yarn and a hook and taught me. We started simple – chains and single crochet. But I took to it so easily that we quickly graduated to double and triple crochet stitches.
Within a year, we had moved back to Illinois, and I didn’t see my grandmother for a long time, but I had the starting blocks to what would become a downright fiber addiction.
Shortly after that – less than 2 years – my aunt B taught me to knit. As much as I enjoy the needles, I’m just not as good at it as I am with the hook.
During my teenage years, I would periodically pick up my hook and yarn and make something. I never could figure out how to read a pattern, though, so everything I made was out of my head through trial and error.
In 2003, I moved halfway around the world to the UK, and didn’t pick up a hook for a long time. When I finally got the itch to crochet, I started looking on the internet and found a lot of resources – not just patterns and forums, but online yarn shops that actually sold crochet items! (Here in the UK, crocheters are a dying breed. Everythings knit, knit, knit. Shit, most people don’t even know that there is a difference between crocheting and knitting out here.)
And somewhere around 2005 or thereabouts, something finally clicked in my brain and patterns finally started making sense. I still prefer to improvise, but it’s opened up a lot of options to me.
I first started a crochet blog over on Blogger back in 2006, and I’ve recently decided (August 2008 ) to move it over here to WP. WP is much more user-friendly than blogger, I have to say. And since I’m on WP all the time and hardly ever over on Blogger, I figure it just makes sense.
So there you are. Hello, my name is NuckingFutz, and I’m yarn krazy. And I’m not ashamed to admit it, either.
